Chevrolet Volt is one of the pair of GM’s high-volume electric cars, with other being Cadillac ELR coupe. This compact hatchback is in its last year as first generation model and brings no changes for five years now. However, its concept is still fresh and represents the cars of future. 2015 Chevrolet Volt Hybrid will be one of the most economical cars on the market.
The Engine range
What makes Volt special is its powertrain. Its 435 pound lithium-ion 17.1 kWh battery gives it 38 miles of all electric range and 1.4L I4 petrol engine serves as a range extender which turns fuel into electric power. It offers unlimited range and average Volt owner visits the gas station every 900 miles. Charging time lasts 8-10 hours or half that time with 120 V and 240 V outlets respectively.
Volt’s front looks like Spark’s front, with silver plates instead mesh in grille department. Angular headlights and available foglights round up very sharp front end. Volt also has blacked roof, tailgate and part of side doors, just below the windows. Rear end has a spoiler and trapezoid laid-back tail-lights.
2015 Chevrolet Volt Hybrid Design
Inside, Volt is offered in two-tone color arrangement with standard cloth or optional leather seats. Dashboard has golden, silver or white lines which start just above the instrument panel and go sideways while becoming much wider in door panels. Instrument panel is very neat and, beside shifter, offers 7-inch touch screen and all controls for audio system with six speakers. There’s also an USB port, 12-volt power outlets and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, all of which are standard. Premium option package adds heated driver and front passenger seats and removable rear seat armrest with storage, but requires leather trim upgrade. There’s also optional premium Bose 7-speaker sound system with navigation. Safety features include electronic stability and traction control, forward collision warning and lane-departure warning, while Volt lacks the rest of the advanced safety features.
Beside almost 40 miles of all electric range, Volt returns fuel economy ratings of 37 miles per gallon combined. However, its biggest advantage is the ability to offer its owners headacheless life as they don’t have to visit gas stops at all if they use it for short distances.
