Another hybrid car coming from Toyota, new 2015 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Toyota RAV4 is best-sold SUV in Japanese manufacturer’s lineup and as that is offered with a sibling in electric form. RAV4 EV isn’t marketed globally like its conventional brother, but can still be found in a few markets, including the US.
However, as far as USA goes, RAV4 is only available in California thanks to its poor sales nuimbers. 2015 year model will be carried over and we’ll see if Toyota decides to expand its marketing range.
Under the Hood
It will keep its AC induction Tesla-made motor with 154 hp (115 kW) of max power. Together with a traction lithium-ion battery pack which has as much as 129 kW and two drive modes (normal and extended), RAV4 will yield 218 or 273lb-ft of torque in normal and sport modes respectively.
Styling – Interior and Exterior
This zero emission vehicle will keep its design well-suited for hybrids as it comes without grille in a real sense of word, but with a plate and Toyota EV badge on it. Trapezoid lower air intake is open toward the road and nice angular headlights round up the front end. Back end comes away with thick pillars, triangular tail-lights and big tailgate with a roofline spoiler.
RAV4 is a compact SUV and EV versions need some additional space for the hybrid powertrain, but this is not a vehicle which suffers from the lack of room. In fact, RAV4 EV has plenty of cargo space which is surprising indeed. Its interior is generally more modern than those in conventional models and you can find all 50 shades of gray in it. Custom hybrid gauge has a blue radiant glow while displaying all the relevant hybrid system info and speed in digital form. 8-inch high resolution touch screen display is an improvement over interior combustion engine models and comes with all available infotainment features including navigation and HD radio.
SofTex trimmed heated front seats with 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and 4-way adjustable front passenger’s seat will be responsible for your comfort. Rearview camera is standard in EV model, and so are blind-spot monitors and cross-traffic alerts. Standard safety features like eight airbags, stability control and anti-lock brakes complete the impressive list for a compact.
2015 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Price and MPG
RAV4 EV returns 78 mpg estimated fuel economy ratings in the city and 74 mpg estimated on the highway. 103 miles of driving range will be more than plenty for every day commuting. However, all these improvements over conventional RAV4’s cost $50,000. Pretty steep for a non-luxury compact, isn’t it?
2015 Toyota RAV4 EV hybrid is much more advanced and feature-rich vehicle than standard RAV4 can ever be. It has no emmisions and offers very good estimated fuel efficiency, but comes at a high price and that’s the reason why it is only available in California.
