New concept is accessible, new 2015 Toyota TE-Spyder 800 Hybrid. Many people could ponder upon this question for days and still wouldn’t be able to find an answer, and here it is: what do Toyota Prius and Toyota MR2 have in common? One is a hybrid car built for efficiency and other is compact sports car built for sheer enjoyment.
Recently, at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon Toyota presented a mixture of these two. However, it isn’t only a mixture of the two vehicles, it is a combination which brings out the best of two entirely different Worlds, from economic commuting one, and from performance and drive-oriented one.
The Engine range
Under the hood of a TE-Spyder 800, which is the official name of this concept, beat the 1.5L 4-cylinder heart and Prius’ electric motor which together put up more than 200 hp of combined output. CVT transmission is yet another part carried over from Prius, and with it TE-Spyder can achieve 0 to 60 time in 5.8 seconds.
Styling – Interior and Exterior
TE-Spyder 800 certainly doesn’t look like a Prius, but it doesn’t look like a MR2 either (even though it’s much closer to it). This 2,200 pounder is built from lightweight materials and has a carbon-made grille on generally smiling front end fascia which also comes with thin angular headlights and specially designed hood. Behind front and in front of the rear fenders, you can see big enough air inlets which further add to the aerodynamics. Rear end is finished with a pronounced bumper, sharp tail-lights and a supercar-like deck behind the small cabin, just like you’ll find in Ferrari’s or Lamborghini’s.
This compact convertible has a practical and simple cabin with only two Recaro seats. Just like the seats, steering wheel is also sporty, and behind it, there’s a TFT screen display which pops out when car is started and does multiple jobs, including the job of a gauge cluster. Dashboard flows out into a special dividing cluster which holds the CD player with its controls, while the shifter is positioned behind it, in a very high elbow position.
2015 Toyota TE-Spyder 800 Hybrid Fuel Efficiency
Words on fuel economy or range are still eluding us, but given the fact that TE-Spyder 800 is so light, there aren’t many batteries below it. This means that all-electric range isn’t so high, but fuel efficiency, on the other hand has to be.
Toyota TE-Spyder 800 is a fine-looking compact concept which is still uncertain, production-wise. If Japanese manufacturer decides to produce it, however, it might get one of the greenest sport cars around which would return great fuel economy numbers thanks to its light body structure.
