2016 BMW X1 EV Price and Release date

Rumors started to surface about a 2016 BMW X1 EV all the way in 2013 but until now BMW didn’t say anything about what could power their next generation electric vehicle. However, an electric car based on the X1 has just been released which might show us where the project is heading.

This car is made by Zinoro and it is only available in China. Its price is similar to a normal petrol powered X1 but the engine in it is totally different. While the base X1 is one of the better compact hatchbacks, the electric model will surely be the top of its range. Its main rival will be the RAV4 electric which even though doesn’t sound all that impressive, it is a car made in cooperation with Tesla.

Under the Hood

While we don’t know for sure what type of engine BMW is going to go with the X1, Zinoro will be using a 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque electric motor coupled to a 30 kWh battery. This will give it a maximum range of around 93 miles, a top speed of 110 miles per hour and a 0 to 60 time of just under 8 seconds. The X1 EV on the other hand will most likely use a more powerful system in order to keep the sport appeal of the car.

We might even see a 200 horsepower and more than 350 lb-ft of torque electric motor which with the help of a bigger battery should go more than 150 miles with a single charge. This engine will give the car a 0 to 60 time of less than 7.5 seconds and a top speed of around 120 miles per hour and unlike the usual model, it might only come with a rear wheel drive system. A four wheel drive model might come in the future with dual electric models but we don’t know this for sure just yet.

There are going to be drawbacks and the most important one is going to be the fact that the 2016 BMW X1 EV will most likely not support fast charging, meaning that a full charge might take as much as 2 hours or even more than that which is worse than its main competitor, the Model X from Tesla.

Design – Inside and Outside look

On the interior the car is going to be quite similar to the normal model but with a few higher end options. It will be similarly equipped to a top of the range X1, so leather upholstery, satellite navigation, surround audio system, dual zone automatic climate control and even electrically heated and ventilated seats are going to come as standard. Options will likely include a panoramic roof, a different type of leather for the upholstery as well as more comfortable seats.

The outside of the 2016 BMW X1 EV on the other hand will be quite easy to differentiate from the normal model. This is because there will be no exhaust and on the car, the electric markings of BMW are going to be visible. The front end will likely get a new grille as well as a different bumper with smaller intakes to aid the car in the aerodynamics department. The wheels are going to be BMW specific but this time low rolling resistance tires are going to come as standard.

As far as the price goes, the 2016 X1 EV will likely cost as much as 60.000 dollars if not even more than that. The release date is likely going to be sometime in 2016, most likely at the end of the year. The car will get a few changes over the base model in order to make it look like an electric vehicle but as far as we know, it will be a X1 at its core.

Actually, new 2016 BMW X1 EV is very good mid-size SUV. Therefore, the key competitors are Toyota RAV4 EV and Tesla Model X. If you interested for RAV4 EV, price starts from 49,800 dollars. On the other hand, costs of Tesla Model X are around 65,000 dollars.
