GM launched the latest edition, 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid. After very short eighth generation which lasted only couple of years and which was the shortest period in Malibu’s history, GM decided to answer the critics and change the car almost completely. Ninth generation debuts later this year, and Chevy even decided to offer hybrid version again. 2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid will finally be a worthy competitor to some of its well-known counterparts.
2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Engine
This, however, isn’t the first ever hybrid Malibu to be produced. First hybrids under the nameplate were offered during 2008 and 2009, but were subsequently discontinued as mild hybrid system didn’t quite fulfill the expectations. This time, Malibu gets a full gas/electric hybrid system which should raise fuel efficiency considerably.
1.8L 4-cylinder engine is complemented by couple of electric motors for a total output of 182 horsepower. However, 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is too small for any all-electric drive and you shouldn’t expect that from 2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid.

Styling – Inside and Outside look
New Malibu has also grown in size. However, it is lighter by some 300 pounds which promises further fuel savings. Still, the most important thing are its looks. Chevy’s mid-size sedan is now more handsome than before which is another ace up its sleeve. Frontal fascia is wider-looking thanks to the new, slimmer two-storey grille. Whole car is toned down for better driving dynamics and better design.
Being more upscale than their regular siblings, hybrid models are furbished with plenty of chrome outside. Finally, Malibu’s overhang is gently curved and fashionably executed.
Interior is somewhere between family and luxury options. Most of Malibu hybrids will be furbished with leather seats, but they still aren’t exactly luxury cars. However, some wood grain covers in middle tunnel and leather covers on the dash might suggest otherwise. In any case, comfort has been elevated to the new level. For starters, there’s now more legroom at the back, and some of available features are really mind-blowing.
7 or 8-inch tablet-like touch screen display is supposed to control all infotainment systems including your own Wi-Fi router with 4G LTE capability. Safety features are even more impressive. Apart from all mandatory systems, you’ll receive a long list of either standard or optional advanced electronic features.
That way, you can enjoy pedestrian detection with automatic braking, blind-spot monitors, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, forward-collision warning and adaptive cruise control. We haven’t forgotten a thing as that’s pretty much everything you can get today regarding active safety features.
2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Price & MPG
2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid is supposed to finally produce a high-end fuel economy figures. Chevy expects 48 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway, but these numbers are yet to be confirmed (or confuted ) by the EPA. Top models of conventional lineup cost around $30,000 which means that base hybrids should start from less, while top hybrid Malibu’s might reach the $35,000 mark.
The biggest rivals are: Honda Accord Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid.
2016 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid is finally a car with true hybrid performance and fuel efficiency. Chevy’s evolution of 50-year old Malibu nameplate is, thus, finished for the moment and we anticipate a long and prosperous life for it.
