All-new model has been presented, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e Plug-In Hybrid. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE does seem like a new model, but in it is actually the renamed SUV known as the ML model. Mercedes has released details of the lineup of the 2016 GLE models, in that lineup is also their first-ever plug-in hybrid SUV, known as the GLE 550e.
It’s the third plug-in hybrid of the German company, after the 2015 S 550 Plug-In Hybrid, an amazing luxury sedan that was shortly available in California, and the 2016 C 350e
The Engine range & Specs
Under the skin of the GLE 550e, there is a combination of the 329-hp V-6 engine and a 85-kW electric motor, all paired up with the company’s 7-speed automatic transmission. Total power output from the two systems is 436 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. This system combination is quite similar to that used in the plug-in hybrid S-Class sedan, while the C 350e has the electric motor paired up with a 2.0 l 4-cylinder engine.
Only on electric power the new SUV can reach up to 18.6 miles. As far as the system modes are concerned, drivers can select the default Hybrid mode, the E-Mode, E-Save– conserves battery charge for later use, and Charge– uses the engine to charge the battery. The 8.8 kW/h lithium-ion battery pack is placed under the back load deck.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e Plug-In Hybrid Design
While the previous model only went trough mid-cycle facelifts, the new GLE-Class has gone through a major exterior upgrading, especially in the car’s front end. In order to follow the same design language as other Company models, the GLE vehicles come with a front fascia that is very similar to the GLE Coupe’s face, which is nothing unusual, having in mind that they share the same platform. The redesigned wheels are excellently fitted to the sides of the vehicle, which have the character line that ends at the rear door’s end.
A part of the M-Class family is a distinctive C-pillar. Furthermore the front fascia comes with completely redesigned headlights, bumper, grille, hood and wings… pretty much everything. In the back, the taillights now feature redesigned LED strips, while down low, the tailpipes have new surroundings.
As far as the exterior goes, the inside of the car is mostly transferred from the GLE Coupe model, but the finishing touch has been improved a bit, with the upgraded materials used for a more luxurious look and feel. A much bigger and more tablet-looking center display is fitted in the center console, which is slightly bigger and in a way reminds of the Porsche Cayenne’s center console. When talking about the center consoles, we have to also mention that the GLE-Class now comes with a new touchpad controller that can be used for the control of the infotainment system.
The improved interior also comes with a new steering wheel design, and new material colors, which highlight the more luxurious atmosphere. The colors offered for the leather upholstery are: ginger beige, saddle brown, espresso brown, and porcelain, while trim elements come in aluminum, black piano and a wide pallet of timber, and the AMG’s carbon-fiber trim.
