The new hybrid vehicle has been unveiled, 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid. It’s not enough to just change the name of entire class of cars. Mercedes-Benz knows that and their new GLE class benefits from new models and powertrains thanks to that.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid is one of these new models which is supposed to redefine the former M class and pave the way towards more efficient future.
Under the Hood
Even though German powerhouse already announced the specs for entire lineup, most exciting model is certainly GLE 500e. This is going to be only third overall plug-in hybrid in Mercedes-Benz range after S class sedan S550 and C class sedan C350e. Hybrid model’s powertrain is pretty straightforward. There are V-6 petrol internal combustion engine, 8.8 kWh battery pack and 114-horsepower electric motor which together generate 436 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Hybrid SUV crossover will be exclusively all-wheel driven (4Matic) and should receive in-house 7-speed automatic transmission which current lineup of M class (soon to be predecessors) offers.
Design – Inside and Outside look
Together with name change and new models comes a facelift. That’s only natural turn of events. New frontal fascia will be coupe-inspired and should feature one stripe and a star. That’s what works for AMG units in any case, while 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid is supposed to get additional stripe. Trademark singular headlamps and open-mouth lower air intake will be present as well.
There are lots of shapes moving across the SUV’s body. both on hood and in midsection. Finally, rear end features a large tailgate, large trapezoidal tail-lights and large rear window with angled pillars moved up front.
Just like any other Mercedes, GLE 500e plug-in hybrid offers lavishly decorated interior filled with tech features and luxurious materials. Dashboard is half covered in leather, and half in natural wood. Same thing goes for door panels which represent dashboard’s continuation. Quilted leather seats complete the picture which looks great whatever color option you choose.
Middle tunnel is simple and low. It features automatic shifter and central controller for Comand infotainment system. 7-inch color display is carried over from M to GLE class (just like most of the cabin for that matter) and offers standard navigation and other features that go with it.
Needless to say, safety features are highly advanced as well and 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid offers plenty of active electronic systems like rearview and surround view cameras, blind spot assist, active lane keeping assist, active parking assist, pre safe braking and adaptive cruise control among others.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid Price
GLE 500e is not yet rated by EPA, but European NEDC ratings read 19 miles of all-electric range. These will most certainly be lower by U.S. standards, but GLE hybrid is still supposed to be more efficient than its siblings and, at least good enough for fuel-free grocery shopping. Pricing is not yet disclosed as well, but you can expect the price tag to start from at least $70,000.
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE hybrid should be a fine fit to people who usually need luxury SUV/crossovers, but also require some all-electric drive from them. It is true that GLE 500e doesn’t offer much of it, but at least it should beat other models with these few miles it gets.
