2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell

Monster on the road, 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell coming. Even though SLS AMG models were recently replaced by all-new AMG GT, their legacy lives on. New model is pretty much the same car with different name.

Apart from supercar styling and performance, SLS nameplate was best-known for offering one of the first all-electric supercars and 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell will finally become a reality, but under a different moniker, however.

Under the Hood

This electric racer is powered by modern powertrain which consists of four synchronous AC electric motors. You can easily note that there’s no conventional internal-combustion engine anywhere near this car, but AMG E-cell still delivers superb figures. 526 hp and 649 lb-ft of torque are even more impressive when you consider previous statement. Top speed has been limited to 155 mph, but some 10 mph of aditional drag are actually possible. Moreover, SLS AMG E-cell speeds up from 0 to 60 in four seconds flat which are solid numbers for any supercar.

Design – Interior and Exterior

As already mentioned SLS and GT models are quite similar in both design and performance. 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell features low and wide body with lot of curves which are AMG’s trademark. Grille features stripe and a star just like pretty much any coupe in German maker’s lineup has, while new models also come with long nose and flared fenders.

The nose is so long that there’s almost no spacing between the door and rear wheel. Finally, the car is finished with a spoiler and Porsche-like, curved rear end. One more thing, though; if you expected to see crane doors exhibited in concept SLS, you will be disappointed as AMG GT doesn’t offer anything unconventional.

Talking about Mercedes-Benz’s interior is both productive and futile at the same time. All cars that come out from German automaker’s factory are refined in their own way, and most of them set the standards which can hardly be followed. On the other hand, that’s exactly the reason why it doesn’t make sense talking about this topic as any car enthusiast knows what to expect from a Mercedes.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell and its AMG GT successors offer premium refinement and plenty of support. Even though they have low roofline, they also execute low seating position so that driver has more grip and plenty of room in the cockpit. Moreover, this car possesses premium feature list and offers all advanced tech upgrades one can think off, including superb safety systems, Mercedes-Benz is known for.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell Price

Thanks to its 60 kWh lithium-ion battery, 2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell offers you more than 100 miles of all-electric range on a single charge. Current AMG GT can be bought for $150,000, but there are even more expensive models out there and E-cell version probably won’t be available below $250,000.

2016 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-cell is an evolutionary car which clearly shows us that even supercars aren’t immune to all-electric revolution. They aren’t that popular yet, given their insufficient range, but things will change in next few years as new technologies will alow all-electric cars to drive longer and longer with every passing year.
