The new 2016 Rimac Concept One is one of the most dominant electric cars, in past decade. Rimac has a rather interesting story because it is a company built by an enthusiast rather than those looking for money. Everything started when the owner’s E30 blew up its engine in a race so the owner decided to install in the car an electric motor to test how things would go. He then developed the idea and decided that it is best to start his own company.
Their only product so far is the Concept One which has been around for a few years now and despite the fact it is not built by an already well known company, it sold better than most people expected.
What’s new for 2016?
The 2016 Rimac Concept One is the latest car which comes with quite a few improvements over the previous model, mostly to its running gear and powertrain which have been revised in order to be more fuel efficient than ever. Also, in order to make the car better known, it is currently used in Formula E as a pace car and thanks to that, they managed to sell over 20 cars so far. While this doesn’t seem like an impressive feat, the car costs just under $1 million which makes it one of the more expensive cars currently on the market.
Under the hood & Performance
Engine wise, the 2016 Rimac Concept One is very different from its competitors because it doesn’t offer a single or a dual motor setup. Instead, the car is using four different electric motors, one in each wheel. This now only allows Rimac to give the car a complex torque vectoring system, but it also allows them to run one engine at a time during highway cruise or low speed city driving. This makes it more efficient and also quieter during long journeys.
The car’s total output is 1088 horsepower and 1200 lb-ft of torque, making it more capable than the 918, LaFerrari or even the P1.
Thanks to this massive amount of power, the car can go from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.8 seconds and it can hit a limited top speed of 190 MPH which is very impressive considering it is an electric car. All that power comes from a 91 kWh battery-pack which should allow for up to 310 miles of all electric range if the car is driven economically.
The drawback is that unlike the Tesla which can charge very fast, the Rimac doesn’t have such a fast charging system, so the car will take quite a bit for a full charge which will prove to be a problem during long journeys
2016 Rimac Concept One Design
The design of the Concept One is unique but it can’t be said that it is beautiful, mostly because of its rather odd proportions. The car is a two-door coupe but the cabin is exactly in the middle of the body. On top of that, it has a rather high shoulder-line and the windows are narrower than on most cars. The front end is quite appealing though and at the back it offers a unique design with clean lines which could make anyone want it. As standard, it sits on massive forged wheels which are wrapped in high performance tires.
On the interior, the 2016 Rimac Concept One is even more impressive than on the exterior. Here, everything has been built from scratch so it looks like nothing else out there. The dashboard is simple in design with a large touch-screen on the center console, the instrument cluster is fully digital while the materials are exquisite and all the surfaces the passengers touch are made out of real leather, aluminum or carbon fiber.
Unlike in most other super-cars, the Rimac offers quite a bit of storage space thanks to the lack of an internal combustion engine.
