The 2016 Scion iA model, that was recently presented at the New York Autoshow, is based on the fourth-generation of Mazda 2, and comes as the first-ever sedan built by Toyota’s youth-focused branch, known as the Scion.
The Scion iA, together with the iM model, will definitely come as a refreshment to the Scion’s a bit pale lineup, which, if you count out the FR-S model, has been kind of lifeless for the last few years. Cooperation with Mazda allowed the Scion brand to get some not overpriced, well designed, and efficient subcompact sedans in their lineup.
2016 Scion iA Design
As far as the outside appearance is concerned, the 2016 Scion iA, not including the front fascia and headlights, is completely same as the Mazda 2 sedan, even the wheels are identical. The influence of the Mazda’s design style is quite noticeable, but the Scion’s aggressive front fascia gives a new meaning to the carried on Mazda lines.
Furthermore, it looks like Mazda’s smallest sedan won’t be available in North America, meaning that if you want to buy the Mazda2 model, you can visit your local Toyota/Scion dealership and settle for a basically same model, only with a different brand badge.
When talking about the interior of the 2016 Scion iA, we have to say that it is a complete carryover from the latest Mazda2 hatchback, which is actually great news. The 3-spoke steering wheel together with the 3-pod gauge cluster, highlight the sporty look, while the premium equipment, such as the center display screen, bring a higher-end look to the inside of the car.
The most notable divergency between the iA and the Mazda2, is the back seat area and the cargo space. The iA is offered equipped with back seats that can be split folded, and offers a very roomy back passenger space. Furthermore, the 2016 iA will continue the Scions’s mono-spec model offering, and it will be equipped with standard features that include a 7-inch display screen fitted in the multi-media system , a Low-Speed Pre-Collision safety system, push-button start and few more.
The Engine and MPG
The Company refers to the 2016 Scion iA as a sports sedan, but the offered engine doesn’t quite live up to that title. Under the hood, the Scion iA comes equipped with the engine of the 2016 Mazda2, and that is a 1.5 l 4-cylinder capable of pumping out 106 hp. The engine is mated with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual. The vehicle’s fuel economy is rated at 33/42 mpg, and those ratings should be good enough to place it in front of the rest of its class.
2016 Scion iA Price and release date
The final price has not been confirmed so far, but from the words of the people from the brand, the 2016 iA will probably wear a starting price tag with a figure of $16,000, and if nothing changes, this price will place the Scion, in terms of the pricing, slightly higher than many of its competitors. On the other hand, slightly higher price is quite justified, having in mind the amount of standard equipment coming with that price.
