The Subaru Company launched the new 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid in Japan, firstly. Even though Subaru is very good at making high performance cars and good value family cars, they are very far behind their competitors when it comes to the hybrid and electric car market. Because everyone has to start somewhere, they released not too long ago the CrossTrek Hybrid, a small family car which is quite good value for money and reasonably fuel efficient for what it is.
In order to expand their roster and gain more experience when it comes to the hybrid car market, the Japanese manufacturer released the 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid back in June. However, the model has been only made available for the Japanese market and it is unclear if it will ever come on the US shores.
Design – Inside and Outside look
The design for this car is something unique because it managed to bring a nice spot of color in the hybrid segment on the Japanese market. It seems that the 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid is only available in a couple of colors and it comes with a few nice additions over the base model. It is available in a unique blue shade which is complemented by color matched mirror caps and door handles and on top of that, it comes with gloss black wheels and black accents on the front and rear bumpers.
There is also a small roof spoiler to show that this model is a bit more special than the usual car. The suspension system has also been revised, so while the car lacks power, it makes up with the way it drives.
The interior has not been left untouched either so while it is not the best equipped on the market, it makes up for that with the way it looks and feels. The materials have certainly improved over the years and the latest model of the car is a cut above some of its competitors. The Sport Hybrid model also adds a few unique features such as blue contrasting stitching, piano-black accents on the dashboard and a microfiber material on the seats which is much more refined than the cloth on the base models.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid comes equipped with the same powertrain found in the hybrid CrossTrek. This combines a 2 liter naturally aspirated flat-four petrol engine with a small electric motor. The petrol engine is good for 160 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque while the electric motor is only there to help the petrol engine during high load situations. Unfortunately, it is not capable for all electric driving but it will move the car all by itself when the Start/Stop system engages.
Thanks to it, the car should offer a combined fuel consumption of nearly 48 MPG in Japan while the US version will likely be rated at right around 32 MPG on average which is still good for the price. The drawback is that the CVT gearbox is slow and even though it is fuel efficient, it does not offer any kind of feedback to the driver so many will prefer to get a manual instead.
2016 Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid Price
The car is based on the latest generation of the Impreza and it shares its powertrain with the CrossTrek. Unlike the latter though, the Impreza looks better, it is sportier and it should also be better value for money. If it will ever come on the US market, the actual price would be closer to $22,000 which is very good considering what it has to offer.
The only real drawback we see with the car is that the hybrid system is not the most advanced on the market, but this may very well change in the near future.
The biggest competitors are Toyota Prius Liftback and Volkswagen Golf.
