2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE


A new concept has been presented, 2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE. Volkswagen Group has its plants across the globe, including the states. Newest American-made Volkswagen comes next year and it’ll be a three row crossover. 2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE has already debuted as a concept and there’s still some work to be done before it makes production. However, this is the last concept prior to production and next one will be the real deal.

Drivetrain Options

Not only that Cross Coupe GTE promises to be high-quality German crossover built in the states, it will also come in both conventional and hybrid forms. Internal combustion lineup will likely consist of 3.6L V6 petrol and corresponding TDI diesel version. This would already be enough for most cars, but 2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE gets a hybrid which pairs former of the two mentioned internal combustion engines with couple of electric motors.

One of them makes 54 horses, while other generates 114 horsepower. Together with internal combustion V-6 mill, they amount to a total of 355 horsepower. Add to that 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and you’ll get yourself all-electric drive capable crossover with more than solid fuel efficiency. Transmission is 6-speed dual-clutch, while drivetrain is all-wheel in hybrids, and dual in conventional models.

We have already mentioned hybrid’s ability to travel on electricity alone, and it will be able to offer around 20 of those miles. Apart from that, it will return 70 MPGe. Conventional lineup should also be rather efficient, at least in diesel versions.

Design – Inside and Outside look

Design-wise, 2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE will offer VW’s next-gen styling. Concept model’s rectangular grille and its symmetrical lower air intake might not get carried over exactly as they are, but they shouldn’t get changed too much as well. Profile should also be slightly trimmed, especially in crease department, and rear end is supposed to go through most changes. For starters, it will get all new tail-lights (more production-ready ones), and it will lose its current sharp, angular shape.

Concept car’s interior is still too angular and futuristic to be produced. While sharp lines might be kept, more conventional materials will take place in order for cabin to get somewhat of a vintage look compared to current layout. It won’t be truly vintage, however, but contemporary and top class materials will certainly help in achieving it. Depending on a grade, 2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE will offer either leatherette or premium leather seats, and top models should even offer wood grain accents.

Whether dual screen layout will be kept, we don’t know yet. Expect at least one touch screen display from the get-go, however (probably concept’s 10.1-inch screen). Finally, just like any Volkswagen, Cross Coupe will offer rather advanced list of convenience and safety features which should be announced soon.

Unfortunately, prices aren’t disclosed yet, but should be lower than Touareg’s and higher than Tiguan’s. Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee are the biggest competitors. But, on the other hand, one of the main weaknesses is a production, because, that  is a concept, still.

2016 Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE should further cement VW brand’s spot in North America. This three row family crossover is just what the market needs thanks to its great fuel economy figures from both hybrid and diesel models. Needless to say, German quality is unquestionable.
