Audi is currently preparing to directly target Tesla and their electric cars which are becoming more successful every day. A few months ago at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Audi released the E-tron quattro concept which showcased a sporty looking crossover with a fully electric powertrain. While many thought that the car was just a concept, Audi now stated that they will release a second concept car at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2016 and this new concept was going to be the preview for the future 2017 Audi Q6 E tron.
This is great news because it means that Audi is finally moving away from the fossil fuels in the favor of electricity-powered cars.
While there are still a lot of details unknown about this future model, it seems that the upcoming Q6 will be based on an all new platform. This is a bit unusual for Audi which has most of their models built on modular platforms. This new one will be built mostly out of aluminum and carbon fiber in order to be as light as possible. This is necessary because the car will carry a lot of weight in batteries.
2017 Audi Q6 E tron Design
The design is still under wraps but the 2017 Audi Q6 E tron should be mostly based on the quattro concept showcased a few months ago. This means that instead of the usual Audi corporate look, the car will feature a more futuristic design, similar to what BMW is doing with their “i” models. The front end will make use of a new hexagonal grille while the LED headlights will get a different shape than the usual Q7.
At the back the car will feature a similar design to the concept car and we expect it to have the edgy look of the concept as well. In terms of shape and size, the Q6 should be similar in size to the Q5 but it will have a more sportier stance, more similar to that of its Porsche siblings.
Inside the cabin the production model of the Q6 will feature all the usual equipment and design choices of Audi’s current line of cars. However, we do expect to see some changes such as an all new instrument cluster which will use an LCD screen instead of the old analogue dials while the center console will not get all the usual buttons of Audi’s current models but only a large LCD screen with Audi’s MMI infotainment system.
Under the Hood
In terms of engines, the 2017 Audi Q6 E tron is very likely going to use the same powertrain found in the concept car or in the R8 E tron. This time around though the powertrain is going to suffer some changes in order to offer more torque, less power and be more efficient and reliable during long-term use. This means that the car will get four electric motors, one in each wheel, with a total rated power of around 370 to 400 horsepower and more than 550 lb-ft of torque.
Thanks to having no transmission, the car will also be able to benefit of an extremely complex torque vectoring system. In terms of performance, it should be able to get at 60 MPH in around 5 seconds and get to a maximum top speed of 130 MPH. The biggest advantage over the Model X will be its 100 kWh battery which is expected to offer more than 350 miles of range while being able to recharge in around an hour thanks to a new charging system developed together with Porsche.
2017 Audi Q6 E tron Price & Release date
The official release date for the production model is likely going to be sometime in the end of 2017 and it should cost no more than $90,000 for a base model.
This is actually cheaper than the Model X and it should give Audi a real advantage here. As you may to see, Tesla Model X SUV is the biggest rival of the new 2017 Audi Q6 E tron.
