Audi unveils an all-new concept at 2016 NAIAS, named 2017 Audi Q6 H tron. Audi released some time ago the Q6 concept car which was shown as a fully electric car intended to compete with the Model X. Not too long ago they also released a statement which said that they also plan on bringing a few other types of powertrains for their car and one of these is going to be the 2017 Audi Q6 H tron which will be in fact the hydrogen-powered version of the car.
While it may be just a marketing stunt, they already said that this new model is coming to the Detroit Auto Show in January 2016 and it should be offered as a production model after the official release.
News & Improvements
While details are scarce at this point, Audi did show us how the concept looks and we have to say that it takes all the best things from most of their cars. Also, unlike their other models, the Q6 is going to be using a new platform which will be made out of aluminum and carbon fiber in order to save as much weight as possible.
Under the Hood
In terms of engines, the 2017 Audi Q6 H tron will be identical to the usual electric version of the car. This means that it will take roughly the same setup used by the R8 E tron which uses four engines, one in each wheel. This not only allows Audi to give the car a complex torque vectoring system, but it also allows them to be very efficient on any type of terrain.
The total power is still unknown but we expect it to have around 370 to 400 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. This should be enough to get the over 4,000 pounds crossover to 60 MPH in around 5 seconds and up to a limited top speed of 130 MPH. The best part comes in its fuel type which is hydrogen.
Instead of using batteries, the H tron will use large hydrogen tanks mounted low in the chassis, so it will have a great center of balance as well as enough room for people and luggage. These will be able to hold enough hydrogen for around 300 miles of range but considering that it only takes a couple of minutes to refill the car and drive on, it should pose a real problem for Tesla. Also, the only exhaust from the hydrogen cells will be pure water which is far better than the current fossil-fuels on the market.
Design – more aggressive & sporty look
In terms of design, Audi went to great lengths to offer a more unique design than what they are currently offering on the Q5 and Q7. This means that the 2017 Audi Q6 H tron looks sportier and a lot more futuristic. The grille looks different even though it still looks like an Audi while the car’s shape looks a lot more like the Porsche Macan than the Q7 which makes it quite a bit sportier than its siblings.
Inside the cabin, the Q6 concept showcased a while back is too futuristic for production. The car which is going to be released at Detroit will likely give us a better glimpse about what we can expect from a future production model. No matter the changes they will do to the car though, we expect the Detroit concept to feature the same complex dashboard and center stack as the previous Q6 showcased a few months ago.
2017 Audi Q6 H tron Price & release date
Also, the 2017 Audi Q6 H tron will be offered only in the US for now but it could also come around the World shortly after the initial release.
The base price will be kept in line with that of the Model X which means we can expect the base model to cost $100,000 while the H tron version will likely fetch a hefty premium that will most likely take the price to more than $150,000.
