2017 Audi R20 – rumors & photos

Back in 2012, rumors about an upcoming hyper-car from Audi became clear. This new car was going to be called 2017 Audi R20 and it was basically meant to be the R18 LeMans racer tweaked for use on the road. While some internal sources from Audi as well as a few engineers told the press that the car was going to be made, in the mid of 2013 it has been announced that the project was dead. However, there have been people who did not lose their hope and more than two years after that, we are now receiving some information that the car has been in fact in the works and it is intended to be offered as a step-up over the R8.

Rumors and Predictions

The early rumors about the R20 said that it was going to use the exact same hybrid system as the R18 race-car. However, this wouldn’t make much sense on the road where that engine will suffer from limited reliability and rather poor performance during low-speed driving. Instead, the 2017 Audi R20 is more likely to use a newly developed drivetrain which may also be installed in a couple of other VW-group cars.

The upcoming 2017 Audi R20 will be built on a carbon-fiber chassis and it will sport aluminum suspension components, a carbon-reinforced body as well as forged aluminum or even carbon fiber wheels. The end result should be a car that weighs around 3,500 pounds, still a massive weight for something that will be built mostly out of carbon fiber.

This is because the R20 will be a hybrid and unlike the P1 or the LaFerrari which are using a regenerative hybrid system, the R20 will be a plug-in hybrid that will be able to match or even surpass the performance of the other two.

The price is still unknown at this point but if they will decide to build it in limited numbers we can expect the car to cost over $1 million, thus becoming the most expensive Audi ever made.

This new drivetrain will likely make use of a newly developed 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 which will fed the rear wheels via a 7 or 8 speed dual-clutch transmission. This alone will be able to provide upwards of 550 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, already better than the R8. Coming to its aid, the car will also feature a couple of electric motors on the front axle which will have a combined output of around 350 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, basically meaning that the R20 will provide more than 900 horsepower and 1000 lb-ft of torque during acceleration or spirited driving.

This should be more than enough to allow it to hit 60 MPH in less than 2.4 seconds, hit more than 220 MPH and be able to corner just as fast as the other hyper-cars on the market.

All-new Design – inside and outside look

Just like the other cars in its class, the 2017 Audi R20 will likely feature its engine mounted in the middle of the car. This should make for a rather interesting look and if they will decide to base the car on the design of the R8, we could receive a rather interesting looking product. However, there is also the possibility that Audi will go on an entirely different route and they will start from scratch with the design.

Inside the cabin, the R20 will feature enough room for two people and because in the front, where the luggage compartment should be, the car will feature its electric motors and part of the cooling system, behind the rear seats it should also offer a shelf where the passengers will be able to store their luggage. In terms of materials and design, the car will get an all new interior designed from scratch, most likely having a minimalistic design.
