2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In hybrid

2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In Hybrid is the upcoming green car by German carmaker. The current BMW 5 Series has been released back in 2010 so it is in desperate need of an upgrade, especially now when its major competitors received a lot of updates. The biggest change on the new model will be the addition of an entirely new plug-in hybrid model which is likely going to be offered in a few different versions as well. The 2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In hybrid model will be based on BMW’s all new modular platform which will allow the car to be at least 300 pounds lighter than the ongoing model.

The new aluminum space-frame will be at least 20% more rigid than before and most of the suspension parts are also going to be made mostly out of aluminum. This will allow the new 5 Series to have a much lower unsprung weight which will not only make it more comfortable but it will make it better to drive and more responsive to its driver’s input.

Redesign – changes and updates

The design of the 2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In hybrid will change quite a bit over the design of the current model but the car will fall in line with the new generation of the 5 Series. This means that it will receive a new front end which is said to be more similar to the current 4 Series rather than the old 5 Series.

The rear of the car will get a more angular design than before and the car will get a more aggressive design in general which will make it a tougher competitor for all those executive cars out there. At this point in time the car has been spied testing but it was heavily camouflaged so things could change.

Refined interior

The interior will also be heavily revamped and while there are not many details about it, sources say that the new 5 Series as well as its hybrid model will get a more minimalistic interior which could mean that most of the commands on the center console will finally move on the new infotainment unit which is said to boast a 12 to 14 inches screen. This will come with the usual iDrive system which will now support both Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay.

Under the Hood – performance

Engine wise, the 2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In hybrid is expected to receive the same powertrain as the 330e. This means it will get a rather low-end turbocharged 2 liter petrol engine, which will be tweaked for fuel efficiency, coupled to an electric motor. The total output of this system will be around 335 horsepower and it should get past 300 lb-ft of torque with ease. The car will be all wheel drive because the electric motor will power the front wheels and at this point in time it seems that it will receive a much denser battery pack than before.

This should allow the new hybrid 5 Series to get at least 40 miles of full electric range, a hefty improvement over the older model.

Some rumors also suggested that the car will receive an even more interesting powertrain which will be derived from the one of the i8. This would make use of two electric motors powering all four wheels which would give the car around 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Instead of having to install a massive battery pack, BMW would install a small 1.5 or 2 liter petrol engine which will charge the 30 to 40 kWh battery in order to give the car an extended range of up to 400 miles.

2017 BMW 5 Series Plug In hybrid Price

The release date for the usual 5 Series will likely be in the mid of 2016 while the hybrid model should be launched shortly after that. The price is still unknown but expect to pay a premium for it. This could mean that it will be around $5,000 to $10,000 more expensive than the current Active Hybrid model which is not cheap either.

According to the reports, the BMW company will offer on the market a three editions: sedan, Gran Turismo and Touring model.

The biggest competitors in its class will be: Mercedes-Benz E-class, Audi A6, Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF and Lexus GS models.
