A couple of months ago everyone was talking about the upcoming BMW M9, a new hyper-car from BMW which was going to directly compete with the Huracan and Ferrari’s lesser offerings. Nearly two months since then, BMW announced that this new hyper-car will be in fact called the i8S and it will be released on the market as the 2017 BMW i8S, most likely in March this year at BMW’s 100th birthday.
Just like the name suggests, this means that the car will likely use the same chassis as the i8 but the design is bound to change in order to make it a bit more exiting.
What’s new for 2018?
Changes to the i8’s chassis will include a different suspension system which will use lighter components, bigger carbon-ceramic brakes that are going to be offered as standard as well as changes to the wheel’s wells in order to accommodate wider tires, both in the front and at the back.
The Engine & Advanced performance
The engine of the 2017 BMW i8s still is unknown at this point in time. However, we do know for sure that BMW is testing two different powertrains for the upcoming car. One is using a 320 horsepower and over 270 lb-ft of torque twin-turbocharged 2 liter inline 4 petrol engine combined with an over 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque electric motor that drives the front wheels. This should give the car over 500 horsepower and nearly 500 lb-ft of combined torque, enough to make it fast but not nearly enough to allow it to compete with the Huracan or the 650S.
The other powertrain that is currently being tested uses a 3 liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline 6 petrol engine which will develop closer to 480 horsepower and over 400 lb-ft of torque. The front wheels on this model will be powered by a slightly less powerful electric engine offering around 110 horsepower and over 200 lb-ft of torque which gives it nearly 600 horsepower and over 600 lb-ft of torque.
While this still is not nearly enough for the current market, combining an electric motor with a petrol engine would give the car instant torque, so it should behave just as well or even better than its direct competitors, despite having less power and being heavier.
More aggressive design
The design of the car will likely be based on the i8 but most of the panels will definitely change in order to make the car capable of higher speeds and also to make it a bit more attractive. The end result will likely be more aggressive in design and it may also feature active aerodynamic features, both in the front and at the back. This could also be the first car in BMW’s portfolio to feature carbon fiber wheels wrapped in super-sticky tires.
Also, unlike the current i8, the S version will be offered in a lot more color options as well as it will feature a new design scheme, more in line with the M models.
Refined & Modern Interior
Inside the cabin, the 2017 BMW i8S will continue the trend set on the exterior of the car. Here, it will receive all new Recaro seats, a new M-badged steering wheel despite not being official an M-model and it will also get a new instrument cluster to match the new engine as well as more customizing options.
2017 BMW i8S Price & Competitors
There are no words just yet about an official price but considering how things are right now, the car is likely to cost well over $250,000 in the base trim levels which puts it directly in the same spot with the McLaren 650S and other super-cars.
The car will not go on the market until the start of 2017 and even then, it will only be offered in limited numbers.
