The CT6 is one of Cadillac’s newest cars and it is their current flagship sedan which is aimed to compete with cars such as the Mercedes S Class or the BMW 7 Series. However, unlike these cars, the CT6 is actually based on a stretched Alpha-platform which also underpins the smaller ATS and CTS sedans. This means that it makes heavy use of high strength steel and aluminum which makes it more than 500 to 1000 pounds lighter than some of its direct competitors.
This not only translates in a nicer car to drive overall but it also allows Cadillac to build a more comfortable and faster car than its direct competitors.
What’s new for 2017?
In order to take advantage of its rather low weight and improve its fuel efficiency even more, they decided to release the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid, a car which is loosely using the technology found on the ELR and Volt cars. This means that it offers an electric mode only, it can be very efficient and when needed, the car will have the required power to beat some of its more powerful competitors.
Under the Hood
Just as we previously said, the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid is going to use already proven technology but with a few updates in order to allow it to be a true luxury automobile. The base for its hybrid powertrain is a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine which will send the power towards the rear wheels via an 8 speed automatic. On top of that, the car will also use a par of electric motors that will be getting their power from a medium sized 18,4 kWh battery which should be enough to give the car up to 30 to 50 miles of all electric range.
The total combined output of the system should be up to 335 horsepower and 432 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough to get the car to 60 MPH in as little as 5 seconds and get it up to a limited top speed of 155 MPH. Thanks to these electric motors, the car should also be capable to get more than 30 MPG on average which would easily make it the most efficient model in its class by a big margin.
More aggressive design – Interior & Exterior
In terms of design, the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid is nearly identical to the current petrol-only model. However, there are some distinct features to it which are meant to aid people see the difference and also allow the car to be more efficient during highway speeds. The front end features the same clear Cadillac features as all of their newer cars such as the “tear-drop” headlamps and even the imposing front grille.
The wheels on the other hand will be unique to the hybrid and so will be the tires while at the back, instead of a fancy exhaust system the car will feature a hidden diffuser.
Inside the cabin, the hybrid CT6 will offer the same level of luxury and comfort as the regular model but instead of offering five seats, it will only offer up to four individual seats in the back that will recline and adjust accordingly. This is because the car will feature its battery pack mounted between the rear seats and the trunk, so it will lose a bit of space inside the cabin but this should be fine considering it is a luxury vehicle and the back is usually better with individual seats.
2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid Price
Instead, Cadillac will actually import the hybrid model of the car from China, meaning that the price could get as high as $80,000 which would still be quite good considering some of its competitors will cost well over $100,000.
The price is still unknown at this point but we do know that it will not be built in the US.
