2017 Hyundai Ioniq – first uncovred photos

Toyota is currently World leader when it comes to hybrid car sales but there are more and more manufacturers who are trying to get into that position. One of these is Hyundai which is developing an all new car specifically to beat the Prius at its own game. The upcoming 2017 Hyundai Ioniq will be based on their new modular platform, so it will be lightweight and safe.

However, unlike their usual sedans, this will feature a unique design which will give it the best drag coefficient in its class. It should also get a specifically developed engine as well as a rather impressive interior for the price.

So far we’ve only seen the car testing with heavy camouflage on it but a few days ago, Hyundai actually released a couple of teaser images which give us a good idea about how the car is going to look when it will launch, both inside and out.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq Design – Inside and Outside look

The design of the car will likely based on that of the Elantra in the front but the back will be unique with a lift-design similar to what the Prius has. This will improve the drag coefficient of the car as well as give it more space for luggage in the trunk despite having a set of batteries there. The front will feature LED lit headlights as well as a new bumper which will improve the car’s drag coefficient as well. The mirrors will be specifically designed in order to reduce wind noise as much as possible and offer a better view.

Refined Interior

Inside the cabin, the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq will feature a rather minimalistic design which will offer a rather premium experience. The dashboard will feature a large LCD screen instead of the usual analogue dials while the center stack will offer a large 8 inch LCD screen as well as the usual controls for the automatic climate control system and for the car’s infotainment system.

The teaser photo showcased by Hyundai suggests that the car will feature LED ambient lighting as well as LED lit surroundings for the air-vents which would certainly offer a unique experience inside the car.

Under the Hood

Engine wise, the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq is going to get an all new powertrain which will be offered in two different versions. Firstly, there is going to be a normal hybrid car which will compete with the Prius. This will offer a 1.6 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine which will run in a modified Atkinson cycle, so it will be rather powerful and very efficient. Coming to its aid, the car will also get a lightweight and powerful electric motor which will also be used as the starter motor for the car.

This will allow it to run on electricity for short amounts of time and it will act as a regenerative braking unit when needed. The total output for this system will likely hover around 160 horsepower and over 150 lb-ft of torque which should be more than enough for a car that is expected to get well over 50 MPG on average!

The second version of the car will be an all electric model which will use a larger electric motor and instead of the petrol engine it will get a highly efficient lithium-ion battery pack. This has been rumored to get well over 100 miles of range which would be really impressive for a car that costs less than $25,000.
