The Soul is a funky little car which has been the favorite of many people since it was launched nearly a decade ago. The car not only looks very interesting but it also has one of the more interesting interiors in its class and when taking into account the base price of less than $16,000, it becomes a really good deal for those looking to get a commuter car that doesn’t look like a box with wheels.
In order to keep its smart looks and to allow the car to compete with its more expensive rivals, a new model is going to be released with the 2017 Kia Soul which has already been spied testing a couple of weeks ago.
Changes & Improvements
While it will not be an all new car, this mid-life facelift of the Soul is very likely going to come with a new exterior, slight changes on the interior and probably a few upgrades under the hood.
Performance & Specs
Under the hood of the 2017 Kia Soul we are likely going to find the same two engines as before, but only on the conventional trim levels. The base car will get a 1.6 liter naturally aspirated and direct injected inline 4 petrol engine good for up to 130 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque which will be enough to get the car to 60 MPH in little under 10 seconds and up to a maximum top speed of around 115 MPH.
The top of the range model will get a slightly more impressive 2 liter naturally aspirated inline 4 petrol engine which will offer 164 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque which is average at best. A manual will only be available on the 1.6 liter engine while an automatic will come as an option for it and as standard for the larger engine.
The news will come in the form of a lot of improvements for the EV version of the car which is not only expected to receive a more efficient electric motor but also a larger battery. This might allow it to now get more than 100 miles of all electric range which would be a small improvement over the current model. Also, a hybrid version has been rumored as well. This could use a 1.6 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine coupled to a 6 speed automatic which will drive the front wheels while an electric motor will drive the rear for an all wheel drive setup.
New Design – Changes & Improvements
In terms of design, most of the exterior changes that will appear on the upcoming 2017 Kia Soul have already been showcased, while not officially, on the Trail’ster concept car which was unveiled a while ago. The camouflaged model seem to get the same type of headlights, the new wider and slimmer grille as well as similar tail lights to this model. Also, the production car is also likely to benefit from new wheels on the higher end models as well as slight changes to its front bumper.
Inside the cabin on the other hand, the new Soul is likely not going to change all that much over the current model in terms of design. Instead, it should receive a new infotainment unit as well as more driver’s assist features such as a frontal collision warning and possibly a rear cross-traffic alert.
2017 Kia Soul Price & Release date
The release date is still unknown at this point but we assume that the car will be released at the next Chicago Auto Show, just like the previous model.
The price should remain identical to the one before it but the top end models might see a small price adjustment in order to make the car a bit more competitive.
