Lexus is currently trying to expand their roster of cars because they do have some major gaps to fill. In order to do that, they plan on releasing a couple of new models, one of which is the upcoming 2017 Lexus LC 500, a car which has been first thought to be just a concept car. Just like its name suggests, this will actually be loosely based on the LF-LC concept car which was first showcased back in 2012.
While that car was presented as a future super-car, the LC 500 production model will be released as a cheaper alternative to the long-gone LFA.
What’s new for 2017?
Unlike the LFA which was built mostly out of carbon fiber, the 2017 Lexus LC 500 has been rumored to receive an aluminum chassis which was going to be derived from that of the GS. While this seems perfectly reasonable in terms of costs, it could mean that the car will be just too heavy for it to be successful.
We do hope that instead of just cutting corners, Lexus will actually be able to get on the market a lightweight rear wheel drive platform which they will be able to use on their later sedans and even crossovers.
The Engine range & High Performance
Engine wise, the 2017 Lexus LC 500 will be available with two different engines for starters. The base model will be a 5 liter naturally aspirated V8 petrol engine also found on their RC-F and other fast sedans. This will likely get a small bump in power to around 490 horsepower and up to 400 lb-ft of torque which should be enough to allow it to compete with the other sports cars in this price range. A hybrid is also in the works and while the details are still unknown, it seems that the LC will receive a 3.5 liter V6, which could be turbocharged, mated to a couple of electric motors.
This should allow the car to get over 500 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque as well as a standard all wheel drive system, with the front wheels being powered by the electric motors. Just like with the V8, a new 10 speed automatic gearbox is expected to drive the rear wheels via a limited slip differential. In terms of performance, both models should be able to get to 60 MPH in around 4 seconds and both of them should be able to hit over 190 MPH.
More Aggressive & Sporty Design
The exterior look of the production model of the 2017 Lexus LC 500 seems to be quite similar to that of the 2012 concept car, especially since the spied model looks nearly identical. We do expect the front end to be slightly different due to Lexus’ all new grille design but in the back the car will be similar to the LFA. This means that it could be the first Lexus since the LFA to look exciting and fun and not just good and subdued.
On the interior we are pretty sure that the car will borrow a lot of the design from both the RC-F and from the LFA, so expect the same type of center console and only a 2+2 seating arrangement. Unfortunately, there are no photos and details about interior, but we expect that first information about interior will be appear until second quarter 2016.
2017 Lexus LC 500 Price & Release date
This means that it will be directly targeted at the Porsche 911 and the Chevrolet Corvette, currently two of the best cars in the World. In order to be at least able to match their performance and sales, Lexus will have to sell the 2017 Lexus LC 500 for around $80,000 for a base model which could become a really good car for the money.
However, a top end version of the car would likely fetch over $150,000 which would put it in the same bracket with much more powerful and also faster cars such as the 911 Turbo or even an upcoming McLaren.
The biggest rivals are: Mercedes-Benz SL-class, Maserati GranTurismo, BMW 6-series, Porsche 911 and Jaguar F-type.
