2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Plug-in Hybrid – the first spy photos have been relieved. The current model of the E-Class has been first launched back in 2009 and since then, it received an update back in 2013 which still is the most expensive mid-life update ever made to a car. Despite that though, Mercedes still has to launch a new model in order to stay competitive so they will release in the early 2016 the W213 model of the E-Class which will also be the first E-Class to get a plug-in hybrid.
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Plug-in Hybrid is going to be launched within a year of the launch of the base model of the car. This will join the C and S Class models and it should become one of the better selling cars in the range.
Unfortunately, at this point in time there is not that much information available about this next generation car but it seems it will use the same platform as the C and S Class sedans which is a much lighter and also stronger chassis. On top of that, its exterior design should also dramatically change from that of the current model while the performance should increase by quite a big margin, despite the smaller engines of the new car.
Design – Interior & Exterior
Let’s start this small preview of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Plug-in Hybrid with the design of the car because this is certainly going to be the point of interest for many people. The front end of the production model is likely going to borrow some of the design of the older model with the two-piece headlights. However, the grille as well as the actual shape of the body are going to be much closer in design to those on the C-Class. The car is also expected to be slightly larger as well as more aerodynamic thanks to active elements on the car.
On the interior, the new E-Class is going to be a bit more different than its close sibling, the C-Class. This is because many people criticized the free-standing LCD screen on the dashboard which is said to ruin the actual design of the interior. The new E-Class will get a more similar design to the one found in the S-Class meaning that it is likely going to receive a two-screens setup which will offer the driver and its passenger all the information needed.
These two will also feature the display for the electric system of the car as well as they will act as the infotainment and navigation systems. Some also say that the new model will feature quite a bit more room inside the cabin which should be great for most of its buyers.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Plug-in Hybrid has been confirmed to receive a very similar powertrain to the one in the C-Class Plug-in model. This will make use of a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol engine combined with an 80 horsepower electric motor. The total output of this system should be slightly higher than the one in the C-Class, so the car might offer up to 300 horsepower and little over 450 lb-ft of torque, quite impressive considering the engine is just a 2 liter unit.
The electric motor will receive power from either regenerative braking or from a charging port which will allow the driver to charge the car in as little as 3 hours. In this case, the E-Class Hybrid should be able to travel up to 20 miles on electricity alone which may not seem much but it should allow the driver to save a lot of fuel when using the car in busy cities. The drawback of this system is that the fuel consumption during normal driving will be similar to a 2 liter petrol engined car which is far from ideal, especially since it will cost quite a bit more than the 2 liter model.
