The Mirage has been discontinued from the US for the 2016 model year but it seems that Mitsubishi will not completely remove the car from the market. Instead, they are going to release the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage as an updated model which will include a lot of changes over the previous car. These updates will not only make the car better to drive but they should provide a much more efficient model that this time might look half decent.
It seems that the release date is still at least half a year away so most likely the car will be released on the market in the second half of 2016. But, unfortunately, there are no official photos of this new model, like as spy photos.
Design – Changes and Updates
The most intriguing part about the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage is that it will not be an all new model. This is especially odd when considering that Mitsubishi discontinued the car for a year. However, the new model will get changes to its chassis which should improve the way it behaves as well as its safety rating and on top of that, the running gear will be tweaked so it will not roll as much as before.
The design of the car should remain mostly unchanged which is the real surprise here but it will get a small facelift. The front end could now receive Xenon headlights for the top end models while as a standard feature, LED tail lights could be added into the mix. The wheels will see an upgrade as well and the new top end version could get slightly better low rolling resistance tires. Unlike the 2015 model, the new car will likely add a sedan version to the range as well which should boost sales considerably.
Inside the cabin, the Mirage will remain what it always was, a functional car and not much else. Most of the materials will remain the same so expect the same hard plastics and the sub-par upholstery. However, room on the back seats could improve due to a slightly different mounting mechanism. The top end model will continue to be offered with features such as climate control and satellite navigation which are otherwise unavailable on any other car in its price range. On top of that, the new Mirage may also get USB connectivity as well as a leather wrapped steering wheel.
Under the Hood
Engine wise, the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage should retain the same engine as the 2015 model. This will be the naturally aspirated 1.2 liter inline 3 which despite offering a decent amount of power for what it is, it remains one of the least refined engines out there. There is quite a bit of vibration due to its three cylinders and there is not nearly enough torque even though the car will likely weigh under 2,000 pounds. The output for it will be 78 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque which will make it one of the least powerful engines in its class.
The engine will be available with either a 5 speed manual which will require constant changing in order to extract any power from it while the CVT is going to be the one to go, especially since it will likely be able to offer over 40 MPG on average!
2017 Mitsubishi Mirage Price & Release date
Just like with the previous version, the price of the Mirage will remain quite low in order to keep it competitive. This means that a base model could now cost less than $13,500 while a fully equipped car will not go past $17,000. At these price points it should come with a lot of features for its class and even though it will lack the refinement of a more expensive model, the car will be aimed at people looking for a cheap way of transport so it should sell quite well.
