The current Wrangler has been on the market for a long time and it is expected to receive a major update this year. Unlike what many people said over the years, the new2018 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid will not be an entirely new car but instead, it will be more of an evolution of the current model which would actually make a lot of sense if we take a look at their older models. However, this will be the first time when a hybrid will be thrown in the mix, a hybrid which should make a really interesting crossover.
So far there aren’t all that many details available about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid but we do know it is coming because the FCA group showcased a slide which shows us that the hybrid is coming some time before 2018 while the diesel, which was expected at launch, will hit the market before 2022.
This is because gas prices are getting better and better each day and this trend will likely not change for at least a few years. In order to cash in on the fact that people started to buy crossovers and larger SUVs due to the smaller gas prices, Jeep will postpone their diesels cars for at least a few more years. The hybrid Wrangler on the other hand will be just a mild-hybrid where the electric motor will likely be used to recover braking energy and to boost the power when needed.
Just like with the petrol powered version, the hybrid will feature the same part-aluminum and part-steel construction, the new chassis and transmission as well as its new design.
Under the Hood & Specs
Engine wise, the car is expected to use a newly developed hybrid which will also be used on a few of their trucks. This will combine the already well known 3.6 liter naturally aspirated Pentastar V6 with a small electric motor that will be housed inside the new 8 speed gearbox. The car will continue to be four-wheel drive as standard, so even if the power will only come from its electric motor, all four wheels are going to be driven. This is also going to act as the starter-motor and it will boost the combined output to around 320 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.
Take into account though that despite the fact it will likely be able to use its electric motor for a couple of miles at a time, the hybrid Wrangler will not be a plug-in model, meaning it will be usable just like a regular petrol-powered car but only offering slightly better fuel consumption and output.
Redesign – Interior & Exterior
In terms of design, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid will not be all that different from the regular Wrangler. This means that it will not feature low-rolling resistance tires, a more aerodynamic body or even special wheels. Instead, the car will get the same evolutionary design of the normal model, similar wheels and tires as well as a similar color scheme. The spare wheel will still be mounted on the rear tailgate in order to save space while the off-road capabilities should not be impacted in any way.
Inside, the hybrid is expected to feature slightly different instruments as well as a standard infotainment and navigation unit. This will be meant to allow the driver to keep an eye on the hybrid powertrain while the instrument cluster will be configured so it will better fit the car’s engine. The seating arrangement as well as the actual interior space will remain unharmed.
2018 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid Price
The price will likely be quite a bit higher than that of the base model which could mean that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid could start at well over $35,000.
More details about release date and performance we could expect in summer 2016.
