2018 Toyota Prius SUV – based on CH-R concept

Manufacturing the best selling hybrid in the World, Toyota managed to develop their hybrid technology better than most other manufacturers out there. While at first the Prius was just a single car, it quickly received additional models such as a hatchback and even a larger wagon. Well, this time around the Japanese manufacturer is looking to add yet another model to the range with the 2018 Toyota Prius SUV which is expected to be launched in concept form next year.

The production model should follow around a year after that and the car should be ready for sale shortly after.

What’s new for 2018?

The car will be based on the same platform as the new Prius, a platform which will also underpin the upcoming RAV4. This will allow Toyota to install an all wheel drive system as well as it will allow them for a lighter and cheaper to make car, all while retaining all the usual safety features.

2018 Toyota Prius SUV – unusual Design

The exterior will be the first departure from the Prius name and this is because the 2018 Toyota Prius SUV will look nothing like the sedan. In fact, some reports suggest that the car will in fact be based on the design of the C-HR concept which has been showcased earlier this year. Unlike that car though, the production model will feature four doors as well as smaller wheels and possibly a redesigned back end.

The front on the other hand will be almost identical while from the side the SUV Prius will look a lot more like a sports crossover than a true SUV which is what buyers are currently looking for.

Interior

Inside the cabin the car should offer all the usual commodities of a car in this price range. The base model is even expected to be better equipped than a similar RAV4, its only real drawback being the fact that it will offer less space for passengers and luggage. The design will likely be based on that of the upcoming Prius and in terms of safety the car will come with all the usual features as well as a few extras as standard.

The base model should feature climate control, a 7 inch LCD screen to show the car’s current status, a digital instrument cluster, premium cloth seats as well as a head-up display.

Under the Hood & Specs

Engine wise, the upcoming 2018 Toyota Prius SUV will have nothing in common with the usual Prius and this makes us wonder what Toyota will install under the hood. While there are no official reports about this just yet, it is quite possible that the car will get an all new powertrain developed in cooperation with Mazda.

This could mean that the SUV Prius will receive a rather small 1.5 liter inline 4 turbocharged diesel coupled to a compact electric motor. The diesel could be able to provide up to 140 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque while the electric motor will handle city driving with its 150 horsepower and over 160 lb-ft of torque. The total combined power should be nearing 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque with ease, so the Prius SUV will be no slouch.

Also, thanks to the massively efficient diesel engine the car may be able to get as much as 60 MPG on the highway and more than 50 MPG in the city which would not only be the best number in its class but it would also become the most efficient car on the North American market, so Toyota will definitely come out as a winner.

The price, while still unknown at this point, will definitely be around $30,000 because the 2018 Toyota Prius SUV will have to face tough competition from European and American cars as well.
